چکیده

Scatterometer backscatter measurements are becoming an important tool for monitoring the dynamic behavior of the Greenland ice sheet. However, most Greenland studies assume constant backscatter for varying azimuth angles. Detailed analysis of scatterometer data sets show non-negligible (1-2 dB) azimuth modulation. The magnitude and orientation of the azimuth modulation observed by SeaWinds, NSCAT, and ERS are documented herein. The dominate factor is second order azimuth modulation, which is largest for C-band (ERS). For SeaWinds, the h-pol azimuth modulation is larger than for v-pol.

Relating Microwave Backscatter Azimuth Modulation to Surface Properties of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Azimuth modulation of the normalized radar crosssection in satellite data sets over Greenland is investigated. Data sets from the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) and from the European Remote Sensing Advanced Microwave Instrument (ERS) are employed. Azimuth dependence is clearly observed. The largest azimuth dependence occurs in the C-band ERS data with peak-to-peak azimuth modulations up to 3.0 dB. ...

Azimuth variation in microwave scatterometer and radiometer data over Antarctica

While designed for ocean observation, scatterometer and radiometer data have proven very useful in a variety of cryosphere studies. Over large regions of Antarctica, ice sheet and bedrock topography and the snow deposition, drift, and erosional environment combine to produce roughness on various scales. Roughness ranges from broad, basin scale ice-sheet topography at 100 km wavelengths, to larg...

Cryosphere applications of NSCAT data

Though designed to measure vector winds over the ocean, new imaging techniques facilitate the use of NASA Scatterometer data (NSCAT) in cryosphere studies. NSCAT provides data of unprecedented coverage, resolution, and quality which, when coupled with the scatterometer image reconstruction with filtering (SIRF) algorithm, enables images of σ at resolutions approaching 8 km over stationary targe...

Focused synthetic aperture radar processing of ice-sounder data collected over the Greenland ice sheet

We developed a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing algorithm for airborne/spaceborne ice-sounding radar systems and applied it to data collected in Greenland. By using focused SAR (phase-corrected coherent averaging), we improved along-track resolution by a factor of four and provided a 6-dB processing gain over unfocused SAR (coherent averaging without phase correction) based on a point-...

NSCAT Views Land and Ice - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

The NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) is a spaceborne scatterometer which flew aboard the National Space Development Agency of Japan's ADvanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS). Although the three year mission was cut short due to failure of the spacecraft solar array, NSCAT returned over 9 months of observations of the Earth. NSCAT was originally designed to measure winds over the ocean; however, it...
